Fortune worth US $2.8 billion was inherited by her through Sahu Jain family, the industrial family of India.
Sahu Jains belong to a small town of Najibabad, Bijnor district, Uttar Pradesh.
Company Profile

Bennett Coleman & Co. Ltd is the nation's largest media group. It was founded in the year 1838, and is based in Mumbai, India. In 1948, Ram Krishna Dalmia sold out the company to the present group, his son-in law, Sahu Shanti Prasad. It provides media publishing services such as Magazines, Internet and newspapers. Huge brand names such as The Economic Times, Times of India, Femina, Sandhya Times, Times FM and Filmfare are under its ownership. Along with this, various television channels such as Times Now, Zoom and ET Now; and FM radio network like Radio Mirchi also constitute its holdings.

The Times Group acts as its supreme fame-generating source. It is the most circulated English daily newspaper, and is accordingly headed by Indu's sons Vineet and Samir. It was acquired from a British group, and today sells more than 3 million copies worldwide. It employs over 7000 employees, publishes five dailies including two largest in the country, owns fifteen publishing centers, fifteen printing centers and fifty-five sales offices. It further runs two lead magazines, twenty-nine niche magazines, thirty two radio stations and two television channels, producing a turnover in excess of USD 700 million.

Indu, carefully guides every step taken towards the development of The Times Foundation, and has successfully collected national and international acclaim for it. New Delhi is the landmark for its headquarters.

BCCL strives to provide high quality of content in all its spheres of activity. Today, it has risen to the position of India's largest media conglomerate. Initially, it was present in areas of print media, but it's century old policy of innovation and birth of fresh ideas has diversified it into new fields. The company gets its name from the partnership of Thomas Bennett, The Times of India's first professional editor and F M Coleman.

The Bhartiya Jnanipath, which was established in 1944, by the then President of BCCL, awarded excellence in creative literary writing to Indians in any language. Today, this prestigious award lies within the powers of Indu Jain, herself. She is the chairperson of the Bhartiya Jnanipath Trust, and rightfully heads the post being a true patron of art and literature herself.

Failures

Doubts have been raised on the credibility of reports published in the TOI, time and again. Revenue generation through advertisements is amongst the most easy and efficient route, taken up by the media. Although, its usage is inevitable, the ever-rising advertisements in TOI, at times, mislead the reader from the news, and direct him towards the flashy advertisements.

The recession of 2009 acted as a bonanza for its chairperson, shifting her a few places ahead in her billionaire list, like her contemporaries. While the crisis had hit the poor and the working class hardest, the billionaires whose greed and unscrupulousness caused it in the first place, only grew richer;this act became an unethical blotch on Indu, although she might not be blamed for any of it directly.

The Symbol of Matriarchy

A spiritualist at heart, Indu handles the philanthropic genre of the Times foundation. She also writes spiritual columns for it. She is an active supporter of women's rights, and her passionate fight for various causes is well-known.

Under her guidance, the Times Foundation runs community services, research groups and relief funds for various disaster reliefs such as floods, cyclones, earthquakes and epidemics. She encourages budding entrepreneurs and believes in their abilities to shine, and make way for themselves in the world.

She stressed the need for oneness among faiths, in her speech at the United Nations in 2000, at the Millennium World Peace Summit of religious and spiritual leaders. The Oneness Forum, formally launched by the President of India in 2003, also works under the leadership of Indu Jain.

Recently, Indian Congress of Women (ICW) awarded Indu Jain, an International Lifetime Achievement Award, with women empowerment being the event's backdrop theme. She is the founder President of the Ladies wing of FICCI (FLO).

Today, The Times Group is India's most profitable media company, and enjoys 50 percent urban market share of English dailies. Indu Jain acts as the guiding force of the group, and continues to infuse new energy into it, leading ways and heading all, like a true matriarch.

Cyrus Poonawalla

Cyrus Poonawalla

Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla, Chairman of Poonawalla Group which includes Serum Institute of India, India's top biotech company which is among the world's largest makers of pediatric vaccines.

Early Career
Born into a family whose decades-old ties to India’s horse racing circuit through the family's owned Poonawalla Stud Farms, by age 20, Dr. Poonawalla realized that horse racing had "no future in the socialist India of the time." And first experimented with cars. along with his school friend he built a $120 prototype sports car modeled on the D-type Jaguar. But producing it on a commercial basis required more money than they had. Dr. Poonawalla abandoned the idea, realizing that making a product for the masses, rather than India's elite, would be a smart move.

A chance conversation with a vet at the farm led Dr. Poonawalla into vaccines. At the time, the farm's retired horses were donated to government-owned Haffkine Institute in Mumbai, which made vaccines from horse serum.

Dr. Poonawalla figured he could take up the challenge of meeting the demand for vaccines in the country by extracting the serum from horses himself and producing cheaper vaccines. He and his brother Zavaray, who partnered with him early on, raised $12,000 selling horses and persuaded their father to put up the rest. They set up the venture in 1966 on a 12-acre lot and began producing vaccines.
Business Pharmaceuticals

In 1966 Dr. Poonawalla and his brother Zavaray launched Serum Institute of India which launched its first therapeutic anti-tetanus serum within two years, and began producing the anti-tetanus vaccines.

By 1974 they introduced the DTP vaccine, which protects children from diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, followed by an anti-snake-venom serum for snakebites in 1981.

In 1989 Serum Institute began the production of its Measles Vaccine M-Vac and within a year Serum Institute became the country's largest vaccine manufacturer. In the 80s India was made self-sufficient for Tetanus, Diphtheria and Whooping Cough vaccines thanks to the production from Serum Institute.
In 1994, Serum Institute got accredited by the World Health Organization (WHO) to export vaccines from India  and started supplying high quality vaccines to U.N. Agencies such as UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund), PAHO (Pan American Health Organization).

From the inception, Dr. Poonawalla’s primary concept was not only to make life-saving drugs and vaccines, which were in shortage in the country, but also to see that every child was protected. At that time his dictum was "Health for all by 2000 AD". The resultant effort was the National Program of Immunization, which is largely dependent on the vaccines manufactured by Serum Institute and now that philosophy has proliferated worldwide to International U.N. Agencies.

By 1998 Serum Institute was exporting vaccines to over a 100 countries and by 2000 one out of every two children in the world was vaccinated by a vaccine of Serum Institute of India.

Dr. Poonawalla’s strong belief in "No Compromise with Quality" and willfull commitment in "Health for All with affordable Vaccines”  has today lead Serum Institute to become India’s leading biotech company producing over a billion doses a year that sell in more than 140 countries around the world.

Horse Racing

Dr. Poonawalla has strong ties with India’s horse racing and breeding Industry through the family’s Poonawalla Stud Farms, started by his late father and now run by him and his younger brother Zavaray. He was the sole representative of India at the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) and was a member of the Asian Racing Federation (ARF) for more than a decade.

He was also elected Vice Chairman of the Asian Racing Federation and also held various esteemed posts in the Horseracing field that include Chairman, Turf Authorities of India, Royal Western India Turf Club, Stud Book Authority of India and Pattern Races Committee.

Personal Life
Dr. Poonawalla  was educated at Bishops School, Poona and graduated from Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC) in 1966. He was awarded a Ph.D. by the Pune University  in 1988 for his thesis entitled "Improved Technology in the manufacture of specific Anti-toxins and its socio-economic impact on the Society".

Dr. Poonawalla was married to the late Mrs. Villoo Poonawalla and have a son Adar who is the Executive Director (Operations) at the Serum Institute and is leading Serum's charge into new drugs and markets.

Dr. Poonawalla has a passion for collecting cars and has fascinating collection of sports cars and custom-built limousines.  He owns a Cessna 560XL Citation Excel jet, Bell 407 helicopter and recently acquired a new Falcon 900EX business jet.

Karsanbhai Patel

Karsanbhai Patel

Karsanbhai Patel

Karsanbhai Khodidas Patel (b. 1945, Ruppur, MehsanaGujarat) is an Indian industrialist, founder of the Rs. 2500 crore (USD 500 mn) Nirma group with major interests in detergents, soaps and cosmetics. In 2005 Forbes listed his net worth as USD $640 million. He has interests in education, and founded a leading pharmacy college (Nirma Institute of Pharmacy), leading engineering college, (Nirma Institute of Technology). He is sometimes referred to as K. K. Patel.

[edit]Life

Born into a farmer family from north Gujarat , Karsanbhai finished his B.Sc. in Chemistry at age 21 and worked as a lab technician, first in the New Cotton Mills, Ahmedabad, of the Lalbhai group and then at the Geology and Mining Department of the state Government. In 1980 , Karsanbhai set up Nirma, (named after daughter Nirupama) selling detergent powder. This was an after-office business - the one-man company would bicycle through the neighbourhoods selling handmade detergent packets door to door. At a price of Rs. 3 per kg, (one third the price of leading detergents), it was an instant success.
After three years, Karsanbhai felt confident enough to quit his job. Later he said, "The lack of any such precedent in my family made the venture fought with fear of failure. But farmers from North Gujarat are known for their spirit of enterprise." Karsanbhai set up shop at small workshop in an Ahmedabad suburb. The Nirma brand quickly established itself in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The high quality and low price of the detergent made for great value. Fuelled by housewife-friendly advertisement jingles, Nirma revolutionized the detergent market, creating an entirely new segment in the economy for detergent powder. At the time, detergent and soap manufacture was dominated by multinational corporations with products like Surf by Hindustan Lever, priced around Rs. 13 per kg. Within a decade, Nirma was the largest selling detergent in India. Since production was labour intensive, Nirma also became a leading employer (employing 14,000 people 2004). Made without some phosphates, Nirma was also somewhat more environment friendly.
After establishing its leadership in economy-priced detergents, Nirma entered the premium segment, launching toilet soaps Nirma bath and Nirma beauty soap, and premium detergent Super Nirma detergent. Ventures into shampoo and toothpaste were not as successful, but the edible salt Shudh is doing well. Nirma beauty soap is one of the leading toilet soaps, behind Lifebuoy and Lux. Overall Nirma has a 20% market share in soap cakes and about 35% in detergents. Nirma also has successful operations in neighbouring countries.
In 1995, Karsanbhai started the Nirma Institute of Technology in Ahmedabad, which grew into a leading engineering college in Gujarat. An Institute of Management followed, with the entire structure being consolidated under the Nirma University of Science and Technologyin 2003, overseen by the Nirma Education and Research Foundation. The Nirmalabs education project, aimed at training and incubating entrepreneurs, was launched in 2004.
Karsanbhai's two sons and son-in-law are now at leading positions in the Nirma organization:[1] Rakesh K Patel (MBA) looks after procurement and logistics, Hiren K Patel, chemical engineer and MBA, heads marketing and finance, while Kalpesh Patel is in human resources and Healthcare Industry (Nirlife healthcare).

[edit]Awards

In 2001, Karsanbhai was awarded an honorary doctorate by Florida Atlantic University, recognizing his exceptional entrepreneurial and philanthropic accomplishments.
In 1990, the Federation of Association of Small Scale Industries of India (FASII), New Delhi, awarded him the 'Udyog Ratna' award. The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce felicitated him as an 'Outstanding Industrialist of the Eighties'. He has served twice as Chairman of the Development Council for Oils, Soaps and Detergents.
Patel has been conferred with Padma Shri Award for the year 2010.The award will be formally conferred by the President of India Mrs Pratibha Patil.
